Threatened by tensions with its large neighbors India and Afghanistan that periodically break out into open conflict, Pakistan maintains a capable air force. With 17,600 men and 375 combat aircraft, air defense of Pakistani borders is of the highest priority. Training could be better, but effectiveness has been markedly improved with the recent acquisition of the F-16.
